RISING FROM THE ASHES

Sullivan Children’s Foundation hosted a dinner at Laurel Restaurant & Bar to raise funds to rebuild the San Pasqual Academy, the first-in-the-nation residential education campus for foster teens, which was destroyed in the October wildfires. The evening featured an elegant dinner, music and live and silent auctions. Sullivan board members include president Kevin Hayford, CFO Ron Davis, secretary Jan Borkum, Martin Correia, Rachel Higbee, Graham Ledger, Amanda Martinez, Armon Mills, James Mulvaney Jr., Lisa Norton, Kevin Sternagle and Steven Sullivan.



BEST KIND OF RUGBURN:

Musician Steve Poltz performed for patrons of “Heart Strings,” a children’s art auction benefiting ARTS (A Reason To Survive) at Mixture, a high-end home furnishings and accessories shop in Little Italy. ARTS is dedicated to healing, inspiring and empowering children facing challenges by providing free arts-based programs, education and opportunities. Among the art aficionados: William Trumpfheller, Jim Lennox, Laurie Hawkins, Dixie Newman, Jill Hammons, Martha and Jim Ratzer, Salem and Giuseppe Ciuffa, and Mixture owners Misti and Brumby Broussard and Charles Taylor.



WILL MAMBO FOR MOJITOS:

The San Diego chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America presented its annual Celebration of Hope gala, themed “Night at the Copacabana,” at the El Cortéz. Brazilian dancers entertained, mojitos flowed generously, and guests mamboed to live 1940s-era music. Chargers reps and players in attendance included head coach Norv Turner, vice president and chief marketing officer Ken Derrett, public relations director and chapter president Bill Johnston and wife Ramona (who suffers from Huntington’s), director of business operations John Hinek and players Antonio Gates, Mike Goff, Kris Dielman, Clinton Hart, Cory Withrow and wife Kiersten, Shane Olivea, Roman Oben, Scott Mruczkowski and Kassim Osgood, who was the event auctioneer. Also present were Steve Carrizosa, Paul Palmer, Mary Curran, Cheryl Kendrick, Drew Schlosberg, and Kimberly Hunt and Billy Ray Smith.



GOING PUBLIC:

The nonprofit University City Foundation for Public Schools, dubbed EdUCate!, hosted its Taste of the Triangle culinary fund-raiser, featuring guest speaker Irwin Jacobs, at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. NBC 7/39 anchor Bill Menish was emcee and auctioneer. Brook Feerick was chair; Tom Feerick cochaired. Other supporters included former San Diego Unified School District superintendent Carl Cohn and wife Kathleen, Dave Cherashore, John Spinosa and wife Marge Lorang, EdUCate! president Laurel Slater and husband Dan, Elaine Hanson and Bruce Robbins, Cheryl and Tim Creagh, Dan Squiller, Patrick Lyden, Caryl Lees, Chris Kern, Mario Woizeschke, Terri and Steve Gray, and JoAnna Vasquez.



EXTENDED FAMILY:

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 45th annual Gourmet Dinner, the organization’s signature event, held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, entertained more than 650 of San Diego’s top business and community leaders while honoring its Man of the Year, San Diego Charger and big brother Roman Oben. The evening’s program was emceed by Ted Leitner (with assistance from the Charger Girls). BBBS of San Diego County president and CEO Paul Palmer and dinner chair Frank Creede hosted patrons, who included Chargers Nick Hardwick, Igor Olshanski and Quentin Jammer and wife Alisha, along with Frank Arrington, Brian Quinn, Ingrid Hibben and Victor LaMagna, Christopher Sickels, Geri Ann Warnke and Joe Kennedy, Virginia Monday, Bill Geppert and son Will, Gayle and Steve Francis, Louise and Chris Lischewski, Lesley and David Cohn, Drew Schlosberg, Sally and Dan Shea, and Lauren and James Brennan.



WHERE ART LIVES:

Lux Art Institute director Reesey Shaw and the Lux board of directors hosted donors for a celebration inaugurating the Artist Pavilion at the institute’s Encinitas location. Chilean sculptor Tomás Rivas, the first Lux artist in residence, was joined by attendees including vice president and event chair Karen Tanz and husband Stuart, board president Paul Robinson, Ann Hunter-Welborn, Renzo Zecchetto, vice president Laurie Moegling, Jeanette and Kirk Peterson, Linda Brandes, Dr. David Shaw, Mimi and Anwar Fekini, Laura Barry, and Eileen and Carlton Appleby.



ANCHORS AWAY:

San Diego Magazine honored the region’s top doctors, as voted by their peers, at a gala held aboard the Inspiration Hornblower yacht. Following a dockside cocktail reception, guests embarked on a cruise around San Diego Bay for dinner and the awards presentation. Among those setting sail were five-time Top Doctors winner Douglas Wilson, San Diego County Medical Society president Albert Ray and wife Cheryl, San Diego County Medical Society president-elect Stuart Cohen and wife Dana, James Hay, Carol Young, Carole and Joseph Scherger, Rady Children’s Hospital CEO Kathleen Sellick and husband Phil, Lynn and Peter Raudaskoski, Rita and David Priver, Lisa Miller, Betty and Leonard Kornreich, Ellen Beck, San Diego County Medical Society CEO Tom Gehring and wife Catherine Moore, Tracey and David Thorson, Stacey Schwenk, Steven Cohen, and Eric Dettman.



TAPAS AND TANGO:

The San Diego Dental Society treated guests to “A Night in Seville,” a Spanish-theme gala and dinner benefiting the Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Rady Children’s Hospital. Held downtown at the Omni Hotel, the black-tie event was hosted by SDDS president-elect and gala chair Lester Machado. Attendees included 2007 SDDS president Barbara Kabes and husband Gene, Aracely Scott and John McGrath, Escondido mayor and honoree Lori Holt-Pfeiler and husband Tim Pfeiler, County Supervisor (and keynote speaker) Ron Roberts, SDDS executive director David Baron and wife Risa, Madeleine and Frank Pavel, Debbie and Clayton Fuller, Michelle and Douglas Christensen, Kathy Alnwick, Bob Morris and daughter Maddy, Laura and Robert Hanlon, Geri and John Geis, Carol and Soames Summerhays, Melanie Parker and Michael Kisak, Parvathi Pokala and Sathya Pratap Pokala, Carol and Charles Jerome, and Jessica and Nathan Rogge.



FRESH PRINCE AND FRIENDS:

Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, which provides free reconstructive surgery for children with deformities, raised $180,000 at its 16th annual Butterfly Ball, emceed by Channel 8 anchor Dan Cohen and sponsored by Scotty Cameron at the Hotel del Coronado. Other major supporters included Charles Cono and Sonja and Ray Wilson. Guests included Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor and Celebrity Duets winner Alfonso Ribeiro; Melrose Place actor Grant Show; Fred Applegate; Vincent Andrunas; Sheri and Steve Cohen; Valerie Cooper; Diane Schulman; Lynn Stuart; George Daou; Margaret Schwab; James Chao; Erik Moore; and Dale Yahnke.



ALL ABOUT BOB:

The Junior Seau Foundation honored Bob Breitbard for his passion and dedication to sports and the community for more than 50 years at the seventh annual Teammates Luncheon, hosted by Junior Seau at Doug Manchester’s newly opened Grand Del Mar resort. NBC 7/39 sports director Jim Laslavic emceed; former NFL player and Hunter actor Fred Dryer was the keynote speaker. Jim Barone was luncheon chair. Other attendees included Anita Crandall, C.S. Keys, Ron Fowler, Walt Zable, Sandy and Ed Burr, Jim Steeg, Buzzie Bavasi, Maureen Sullivan, Rolf Benirschke, Jane Mitchell and Doug Wilkerson.
