Happy New You
BREAKING NEW YEAR’S resolutions has become as much of a tradition as making them, especially when it comes to vows to exercise. Whatever the reason for the unsuccessful outcomes, we have four simple solutions to shake up your workout and keep your 2008 happy and healthy.

Sweat in Style
Lululemon Athletica
Del Mar • 858-847-9435
As you say goodbye to 2007, do the same to your ratty old workout clothes. (Come on, those tattered sweatpants and stained tees will get no one excited about spending an hour at the gym.) Take a cue from fashionable yogis everywhere and opt for threads that are workout-appropriate and look chic. Lululemon Athletica——purveyor of such double-agent duds——has opened its first showroom in San Diego, and it’s already garnering buzz. The clothes are all moisture wicking (so wear them for marathons or meditations) and extremely flattering (thank you, flat seams!), and can be paired with jeans or a cropped jacket for a casual look. Ever the innovator, Lululemon has also equipped some items with ponytail holders and iPod pockets. Buy a few new pieces and you’ll actually want to work out——that’s how good they look. Insider tip: Pick up the wet-dry warm shorts if you see them——they’re flying off store shelves!
Switch Up Your Routine
Iron Core
Pacific Beach • 858-551-2673
Whether it’s social golfing, light swimming or occasional surfing that gets your heart pumping, try kicking your recreational workout up a notch with a class in kettlebell training. Brought to San Diego by New Jersey native Sarah Lurie, a certified Russian kettlebell instructor, this exercise technique taught at Iron Core is all about leaning muscles through fluid power movements that work abs, butt, hips, thighs and more. According to Lurie, “After a good three weeks, your waist will get smaller and your muscles sleeker.” Unlike yoga and Pilates, a kettlebell workout doesn’t isolate certain muscle groups; instead, it implements natural sinuous motions that echo movements you do in your real life——like carrying groceries, holding a child or flipping a mattress. “You get twice the results from the kettlebell that you would from spending eight hours a week at the gym,” says Lurie. $35 per class. Schedule and pricing at ironcorekettlebells.com.
Join the Club
Club at the Del
Coronado • 619-522-8182
If a change of scenery is what your workout needs, consider the newly opened super-luxe Club at the Del. Complete with spin, yoga and Pilates classes, not to mention access to a private members-only pool, the Club at the Del is becoming the premier place to sweat it out in style. Membership buys you access to the Spa at the Del, private lockers, steam rooms, hot tubs and discounted pricing at the hotel bars, restaurants and shops. See hoteldel.com for details.
Raise the Barre
Pure Barre
Solana Beach • 760-846-6327
In a city consumed by yoga, it’s no small feat that Pure Barre is sweeping the San Diego workout scene. A student of the famed Lotte Burke method that sculpted and toned many a New York lady’s figure, Carrie Rezabek took her knowledge and experience of the technique, tweaked it a bit, moved it west and——voila!——Pure Barre was born. It didn’t hurt that Rezabek was a renowned choreographer and dancer, but really, anyone can do this muscle-toning workout. A hybrid of ballet, Pilates and cardio, this 55-minute class tightens your tush and tones your thighs using the dancer’s barre as part of your regime. The result? That lithe ballerina body you’ve been longing for since adolescence could finally be yours in ’08.
