Summer Stylin'
By Tara Sharp
IT'S TIME to enjoy beach volleyball and poolside barbecues, but don’t let the harsh summer elements leave your locks in need of CPR. Restore and protect your hair from the sun, chlorine and saltwater so it’s soft and glossy this season.
Cover Up
Use hair sunscreen to protect your scalp from harmful UV rays and to shield colortreated hair from fading in the sun. Hair sealants not only protect, they leave your hair looking polished and smooth. Or block the rays with a stylish wrap or scarf——a trendy, but practical, daytime look, says Travis Parker, expert hairstylist and owner of Travis Parker Salon in La Jolla. If you don’t want to deal with slippage and re-tying, a scarf headband is a chic alternative; it looks like a scarf but has elastic to keep it in place.
Life Saver
Conditioning treatments, especially something you can leave in overnight, save hair that’s already dried out. This avocado hair conditioner, from Philip B.’s book, Blended Beauty, is an all-natural moisturizer you can make at home: Slowly warm 2 teaspoons of avocado oil, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons canola oil, 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening and 2 teaspoons coconut oil (or extract) in a small saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and cool. Add 2 teaspoons honey and stir well. Massage mixture into dry hair, comb through, and leave on for up to 20 minutes. Before rinsing, lather in shampoo and rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Straight & Narrow
Smooth, sleek tresses are replacing tousled waves. The perfect complement to boldly defined, face-framing bangs——which everyone from Kate Walsh to Christina Ricci is sporting——is ultrastraight hair. Parker recommends a straightening balm, such as Kerastase’s Oleo-Relax Elixir, to protect your hair from the thermal heat produced by blow dryers and flatirons and to keep the humidity out so it doesn’t frizz up.
Day to Night
Long, layered hair is still big, and it doesn’t take a lot to make it go from beachy daytime to sexy evening. It all comes down to the pony. “We’re seeing lots of ponytails, really simple ponytails,” says Parker. The ideal spot is not too high or at the nape of your neck, but right in the midsection of your head. To add some Grecian flair during the day, try layering skinny headbands that wrap all the way around, or for a glitzy look use embellished ponytail holders like Goody’s shell ponytailers. For a dressier, evening look, try the half-up, half-down style Angelina Jolie has worn. Leave the front hanging down, framing the jawline, and pull the back part into a ponytail or a loose chignon. “It’s very tousled, very languid, almost a slept-in up-do,” says Parker. If you leave hair down in the back, give it some movement with non-fussy curls.
