MUSIC

Piloting Back Home

Stone Temple Pilots, a band that sold 35 million records and had six number-one hits, cut its musical teeth in the late 1980s and early ’90s in San Diego bars and strip clubs. Half a decade after acrimoniously breaking up in 2003, the Pilots, who play a hodgepodge of hard rock, psychedelic, pop and even touches of grunge, are reuniting and will be the first to play AEG Live Concerts on the Green, the new 13,000-seat out door venue at the Chargers’ former practice field near Qualcomm Stadium. STP’s volatile lead singer, Scott Weiland, recently left Velvet Revolver to rejoin his original band, and his Revolver mate Slash (Guns N’ Roses) has since made derogatory comments about Weiland——and vice versa. Ah, rock ’n’ roll. The July 27 show promises to bring a strong whiff of nostalgia to fans of San Diego’s early ’90s hard-rock heyday. Tickets: 619-220-TIXS or ticketmaster.com.

MUSEUMS

Show of Free Spirits

The Shona, Zimbabwe’s largest indigenous group, believe that everything on Earth contains a spirit, and that the stone speaks to the artist, who then works to set the spirit free. Carvings by Shona artists are on display for the eighth time at the San Diego Natural History Museum, July 11–October 12. The stylized sculptures of animals and birds, in various tones of serpentine stone, seem to have a spiritual force. Masks, jewelry and baskets, as well as the sculptures, created by 200 artists, are for sale; proceeds benefit the museum and the African communities where the artists live. “Spirits in Stone——Art and Animals of Africa” also features, for the first time, enclosures of live African lizards, bugs, fish, frogs and snakes. Anthony Porter, curator, has worked with Shona sculpture for 30 years, as did his father. He says he’s never ceased “to be amazed and renewed by the vitality, inventiveness and genius of the artists of Zimbabwe.” 619-232-3821; sdnhm.org.
